Ok, so far it's going well, I 've blended all the colors with water, brushing the pastel dust into clay like masses that will then blend nicely just like paint. this gives a whole new dimension to the work and when set will provide an immoveable base to work on. This will allow me to rub out areas that go astray and start over, while retaining the corrected drawing and base color. Before starting with the water and brush I 've put several colors in various areas that will hopefully blend to the color I need, It's tricky, this is the only way you can really blend pastel, unlike oils or watercolor which you can mix. Mixing pastels too much when they are dry creates a dull and dreary mess. This photo show some of the "painted areas" and about 3 hours of work on the upper portion. This is a fairly big work for me, to keep from smearing the details, I'm working from top to bottom to keep my arm and hand from disturbing the surface. The upper background and her head are done for this pass. I will start a bit on the left side, to bring up detail then return for one more pass at the head and eyes to put in her freckles and more detail of the coat. I spent an hour on the nose and had to rub it all out, this time it's better, tho too light. I can rub out once or maybe in a pinch twice, after that it's not going to work, and I'll have to start all over again.
